Leadership Book - Press Release

Bestselling author and multi-award-winning leadership strategist,

Karlene A. Millwood,

is excited to announce her 5th book dedicated to minority women.

Karlene A. Millwood, MBA

Toronto, December 8, 2020 – Instead of leaning into societal norms for career progression, professional women are opting out to attain more senior positions, albeit with great personal sacrifice. (Karlene Millwood)

This timely narrative comes in the wake of the global uprising confronting anti-black racism and the COVID-19 pandemic that shows Blacks and other people of colour to be the most affected. These recent events prompted Toronto’s Mayor, John Tory, to launch a $1.2 million initiative in support of black businesses to address systemic racism in the entertainment and business sectors.

Women comprise almost 50% of the workforce and are departing from gender stereotypes to take on more leadership roles, but many still face obstacles to achieving their career objectives. This failure to advance professionally has been linked to non-external factors for minority women. Women of colour face unique personal and professional challenges every day, which have been amplified by the onset of this disease. Millwood analyzes if inequities and discrimination contribute to their self-image and may limit their ascension into positions of authority, and to what extent these biases and self-perception inform their career choices.

Millwood, having worked successfully for the public and private sectors, is able to draw from her own experiences and has compiled over a decade of groundbreaking information from BIPOC professionals, who candidly shared their challenges and experiences with succeeding in Corporate Canada, despite their personal and professional accomplishments.

This book addresses the obstacles that women of colour face in advancing in their careers. Millwood provides recommendations for management and strategies on how women can merge purpose with profession, and the role self-perception plays in that.

She has engaged a diverse group of professionals to speak to the subject at the upcoming virtual book launch on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.
