Empowered To Thrive
Chapter 2, Module 3 -
Overcoming Low Self-Esteem
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
(Eleanor Roosevelt)
How do you overcome low self-esteem? By learning to love yourself unconditionally. Know that you are significant and have value, even when no one tells you.
The following steps provide a roadmap to boosting your self-esteem:
-
Be less concerned with what people think about you and more concerned with how you think about yourself. This is what really matters. People will treat you based on how you portray yourself, and this is largely based on your self-image. Think well of yourself and the world will follow.
-
Building confidence will help you to take back your power. (See the next module). You teach people how to treat you.
-
Depression goes when the ability to dream is restored, so start dreaming again. Another way to get rid of depression is to find things to be thankful for. Gratefulness is the antidote to depression.
-
Anxiety is a derivative of fear. We all experience fear at some point in our lives to varying degrees. Overcoming fear is simply a choice to face, or do, that which you are afraid of.
4. Stop comparing yourself to others and embrace the uniqueness of your TRUE YOU. You are
perfect and enough! God did not make a mistake with the way He made you. Be the best
version of yourself, instead of a poor copy of someone else.
5. If you don’t like where you are in life, change it. You are only one decision away from living
the life of your dreams.
Exercise 3
-
Describe your feelings when you experience negative criticism.
-
How does it make you feel when someone voices wrong, or false, opinions about you?
-
What are some steps you can take to turn negative criticism into something positive for you?
-
What are some positive ways that you can deal with people’s wrong opinions of you, while maintaining a good attitude toward the person or persons?
-
Is there anywhere you have given up your power where you need to take it back?
-
List two ways how you plan to do that.
-
Make a note of the times you feel anxious or depressed. What did you do to counter those feelings?
-
What are you most fearful about? What are some ways that you can conquer those fears?
-
Make a list of the times you feel fearful, and what you did in the moment.
-
Make a note of any time you notice that you are comparing yourself with someone else, or someone compared you to another person. How did it make you feel and what did you do?
-
What areas of your life are you the least satisfied with? How can you change it?
